The Prince’s Trust - Success Stories

Prodec Decorators

Shane Reed came to The Trust in 2003 through the New Deal programme for young people.

Start-up
Shane had been unemployed for about two years and had also had some difficult times in his family. He had always wanted to work for himself and set up his painting and decorating business. With support from the Prince's Trust business programme, which included a low interest loan of £2,700, Shane was able to set up ProDec Decorators.

Difficulties
Like many young entrepreneurs, Shane overcame many difficulties - from price competition to trying to gain a market share. But through it all, Shane had the support of his mentor, David Kynaston who always believed in Shane's determination to succeed.

TV break
Shane got a lucky break when he took part in the Channel 5 show How Not to Decorate. The show, hosted by Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister, takes the nation's most needy houses and kicks them into stylish and practical life. The filming took place in Wellingborough and Shane worked with top interior designers, who were all impressed with the quality of Shane's work.
